The Attachment Aware Schools Project

Research in 2009 confirms that up to a third of children have an insecure attachment to at least one caregiver and this will impact on their behaviour in school. Teachers need to know about attachment theory and they need to use it to inform how they teach and form relationships with pupils. The evidence shows that attachment based practice in schools can have a positive impact on academic performance, on reducing behavioural incidents and on improving pupil and staff well-being. The Attachment Aware project also recommends assigning a 'Key Worker' to children with attachment issues. As your Consultant, I can advise on strategies to raise awareness of attachment/trauma based behaviour and on strategies to support children with attachment needs, including designating / training a Key Worker.
